It’s time for What Came Through The Letterbox This Week? time!

Morcheeba are back! Syke is back! Yes they have made another album together and if you like their previous work you’ll like this. That’s not to say it’s just a re-hash of what went before but it’s very them:

Blood Like Lemonade (good name) is perfect Summertime relaxing music, as you might imagine.

The Divine Comedy is/are back! Neil Hannon is back using his usual alias after that crickety diversion. Featuring that cracking single At The Indie Disco and some other songs which cover various Divine Comedy styles that you’ll love if you’re a fan and will be pleased to discover if it’s all a bit new to you.

Bang Goes The Knighthood (another great title) is another excellent Divine Comedy album and has no duff tracks. A scary long note at one point but that should only put people with special ears off a little bit. So Hip It Hurts reviewed it better than I could so ready Vinny’s review here.

You might not have heard of Thomas J Speight but he’s kind of great. Reminds me of Ryan Adams in the days where he made music I didn’t hate. Oh no, am rhyming all over the place now. Anyway, I enjoyed some of his previous songs and his Willow Tree EP (limited edition of 100) was advertised on Twitter and Facebook so I bought it. Simple! There’s been quite a lot of purchasing nice shiny discs direct from artists recently and it’s definitely a good business model.

I bloody love that Willow Tree song.

The other recent purchase was the ‘This Day’ World Hepatitis Day compilation album:

There are some stunning tracks on this album including people you’ll know like David McAlmont, Siuobhan Donaghy, Bernard Butler, Cirkus and Skye, plus loads I had never heard of. It’s a good album and for a good cause, available in the usual downloady places but also on good old CD which I bought from Amazon.

That McAlmont & Nyman Sound

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I think my Album Of The Year has just been decided, after playing a certain new release dozens of times since it came through my letter box on Tuesday. I’m not surprised though, as the idea of David McAlmont writing songs to Michael Nyman pieces sounded like the kind of bloody mad but fantastic idea that I would go for. There are a handful of artists who I will buy blindly due them being that good and he has always been on my imaginary list since his first band Thieves fell apart and led to the first lovely solo album back when I was much younger, far less achey and much less happier.

McAlmont & Nyman

A couple of songs are on the official YouTube channel so here they are:

Take the Money and Run is about runaway bank customers Leo Gao and Cara Young who made off with an enormous amount of money that allegedly appeared in their account by accident.

Excuses, Accusations and Charges is also a crime tale, about the trial of Dorothy Fasola, who I had not heard of until I read the blog about this album’s inspirations.

Other subjects and highlights include Susan Boyle’s experiences with fame on the title track with heartbreaking moments:

I’ve done what you suggested
And the world has paid attention
To my belief but I’m still alone
So millions think I’m ugly now
But it’s the same old story
Until I sing the song and I sense you close

So I’ve done what you suggested
And the world has paid attention to my belief
But I’m still alone.

City of Turin is another standout shiver-inducing track, about human trafficking :

I wave at cars
To get inside
Just to keep warm
I let him treat me like a wife
If I remember just how I have survived
I can take it in, in a car, in the city of Turin

The serious issues do not make this a depressing listen, not at all. This is an essential album for people who like music with depth and feeling. Buy it. It’s that simple!

I wonder who David will do his next project with?
